DETROIT – Multiple variants of the COVID-19 virus are spreading across the United States.
There is growing concern that they will not only be more transmissible, but that they can avoid vaccines. So far, two of the most troubling variants have been found in Michigan.

According to the CDC, the largest number of variant cases have been detected in Michigan and Florida. According to the MDHHS, the largest number of the British variant B117 has been found in the most densely populated areas.
More than half of the B117 variants identified came from an outbreak in the Michigan Department of Corrections. This is another reason why Michigan has more cases identified.
Announcements
The B117 variant has been found in 31 counties in Michigan, it is safe to assume that it is widespread in the community. The concern now is that it may be part of the increase in cases Michigan is currently experiencing.
Other variants are being monitored, but so far only one case of the South African variant B1351 has been found in Michigan.
So far, vaccines appear to be effective against variants.
