(WXYZ) – University of Michigan cancels surgeries to accommodate rapidly accelerating COVID-19 admissions.
Justin Dimick, professor and president of Michigan Surgery, said the entire state is at high risk.
Dimick called on the state for help, as no new restrictions have been announced amid rising COVID-19 cases in Michigan.
Michigan Medicine also issued the following statement:
“Similar to many health systems in the state and the metropolitan area, Michigan Medicine has experienced a record volume of emergency rooms and admissions for both COVID and non-COVID care this week, which has resulted in Extremely high hospital occupancy.Because of rising employment and high continuum forecasts for emergency care demand and admissions, Michigan Medicine has had to make the difficult decision to reschedule a small number of surgeries scheduled for the end of this week and next week in order to maintain safe occupancy levels. We are constantly following the evolution of the situation and will make more adjustments to ensure that the schedule adapts to the availability of our room of staff and the hospital ward, with the safety of our patients and staff, always being our top priority “.
