Are the playable characters teasing?
Yesterday the editor Dotemu jumped out of the sewers (barren … no offense) with the announcement of a new Teenage mutant ninja turtles arcade brawler.
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is in development for PCs and consoles at Tribute Games, a studio not only responsible for the fun Mercenary kings, but which also houses developers who worked on the big Ubisoft 2010 fight Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game. Driven by this trinity of brand nostalgia, studio and frantic fanaticism, it’s worth noting that much of the Internet lost its collective mind when the trailer fell yesterday morning.
From the short game teaser, it is clear that TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge hopes to capture the fantastic multiplayer action of the 1989 classic Konami arcade Teenage mutant ninja turtles and its 1991 sequel, Turtles in time. With fans suffering a big shock at the ad, there are some details in the trailer that might have happened to them.
Excitingly, the animated prologue features a sequence in which April O’Neil drags two Foot Clan suckers, with the Channel 5 news reporter landing a sweet side jump. Next, a shot is made by the Turtles’ tutor, Master Splinter, who traverses a ninja through a sewer tunnel and spins the cane like a maniac. These scenes involve, though purely speculation: that both characters can be played in the new brawler. After all, it’s weird that Miss O’Neil is depicted kicking her ass in such a way. I definitely hope these icons join the list and I’m sure many of you would agree.
As for the villains, we can see The Shredder and his Foot Clan, as well as the creepy two of Bebop and Rocksteady. Also featured in the prologue are the doomed scientist Baxter Stockman, a Triceraton, and a shattered “Mouser,” Stockman’s troubled battle droids. Especially during the foreground of April, we can see the horrible face of the ruler of Dimension X, Krang, briefly seen on the TV screen behind her.
Perhaps the most startling appearance of all belongs to Faith No More vocalist and avant-garde musician Mike Patton, the interpretation of the iconic theme of the TV show makes it the trailer. While TMNT it is certainly very far from the works of Mr. Bungle or Phantoms, the addition of Patton adds a delicious element of … well … madness to the whole affair.
Dotemu’s work with recent releases like Wonder Boy: The Dragon Trap and the excellent Streets of Rage 4 it has given them the reputation of masters of retro remake. Deep fighting mechanics, fun features, a solid selection of characters and numerous cameos and Easter eggs pleasing to fans (Casey Jones, anyone?) TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge it could turn out to be the best digital Turtles launch since 1993 Tournament fighters. One thing is for sure … it will be a long wait …
Now, if you don’t mind, I have to go start my online application for Irma DLC.
