Monday’s COVID-19 update from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) includes 2,693 new cases and 11 recently reported deaths, including 10 deaths that occur in September (one in August was reported today).
The death toll in the state has been 7,903 since the start of the pandemic. Of the total deaths, 57.8% (4,564) were long-term care residents.
As of Sept. 9, the state reported that 3,352,357 people have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 3,163,785 people have completed the vaccine series. The percentage of Minnesota’s population with at least one trait, by age group:
- 12-15: 52%
- 16-17: 59%
- 18-49: 62%
- 50-64: 74%
- 65 years or older: 91%
- Total population: 60%
56.9% of Minnesota’s total population, including those under the age of 12 who are not eligible for the vaccine, have completed the vaccine series. Hospitalizations
As of Sept. 10, the number of people with COVID-19 hospitalized in Minnesota was 678 (below the 695 reported Friday).
Of those hospitalized, 187 people are in intensive care and 491 in general hospital care. The spring increase recorded a maximum of 202 patients in intensive care and 517 people in general hospital care.
The following explains how many people are hospitalized according to regional location, although this does not mean that each patient has contracted the virus in these specific regions, as they may have been diverted depending on available beds.
- Metro: 105 UCI, 272 in the UCI
- Central: 31 UCI, 68 in UCI
- Southeast: 21 UCI, 52 no UCI
- Northeast: 11 UCI, 24 no UCI
- Northwest: 8 UCI, 17 no UCI
- South Central: 6 UCI, 37 no UCI
- Southwest: 2 UCI, 14 no UCI
- Central West: 3 UCI, 7 no UCI
Test rates and positivity.
The 2,693 positive results of Monday’s update were 46,189 completed tests, which generated a test positivity rate of 5.83%.
According to Johns Hopkins University, the Minnesota test positivity rate over the past seven days is 7.36%.
The World Health Organization recommends that a percentage of positive percentages (divided by the total number of tests completed) of less than 5% be required for at least two weeks to keep the economy open safely.

* Probable deaths are patients who died after testing positive for the COVID-19 antigen test, which is thought to be less accurate than the more common PCR test.
