Faced with a federal capital guarded by thousands of soldiers and under strict security measures, Joe Biden will take office today as the 46th president of the United States.
The former president’s oath is given fourteen days after an attack on the Capitol starring “domestic terrorists” and supporters of Donald Trump while the final certification of the November election count was being held.
Just hours into power, Biden — along with his wife Jill Biden — attended a Mass at St. Matthew the Apostle Cathedral in Washington, DC. Biden’s inauguration will begin around 1:00 p.m. Harris’s swearing-in, which will begin at 12:15 p.m., will be led by Supreme Court Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Biden, meanwhile, will be sworn in before Presiding Judge John Roberts.
