KABUL, Afghanistan (KY3) – A U.S. Navy in Missouri was among more than a dozen U.S. service members killed in a deadly bombing Thursday at Kabul airport in Afghanistan.
Lance Chief Jared Schmitz of St. Louis County Charles, died in the attack, according to a Facebook post by Missouri State Representative Nick Schroer.
Representative Schroer issued the following statement:
“Pray today for Major Corporal Jared Schmitz, who yesterday paid the final sacrifice in the service of our nation. This young sailor was from St. Charles County and is a true American hero. Keep your family in your prayers today.
Thank you for your young service! God bless you and your family, Marine. ”
Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley says he spoke with Schmitz’s family and offered condolences. He issued the following statement via Twitter:
U.S. and Afghan officials say Thursday’s attack outside Kabul airport killed at least 60 Afghans and 13 U.S. troops. Two suicide bombers and gunmen attacked crowds of Afghans approaching Kabul airport.
