Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell says he would “absolutely” support former President Donald Trump if he won the Republican Party nomination in 2024.
McConnell published Fox News’ “Special Report with Bret Baier” on Thursday evening and hinted that some Republicans are already thinking of running for commander-in-chief.
“I have at least four members who I think are planning to run for president, in addition to some governors and others. There are no incumbents. It should be a very open race,” McConnell said. he said host Bret Baier.
Baier then asked McConnell if he would support Trump if he won the party’s nomination for the next presidential election.
“The party candidate? Absolutely, ”the Kentucky Republican replied.
After leaving office, Trump was charged a second time after House Democrats accused him of inciting the Capitol Hill insurgency on Jan. 6, but the Senate did not convict him.
Since then, the former president has said he plans to remain active in the Republican Party, including the 2022 midterm elections.
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, who has been an avid critic of Trump, recently told the New York Times that if Trump plans to run in 2024, he believes he will be the party’s candidate.
