MK Meir Porush attacked near his home in Jerusalem

Judaism leader Meir Porush, a Torah Jew, was attacked near his home in Jerusalem on Monday morning, an Israeli police spokesman said in a statement.

According to Israeli media, the elected official was attacked by two men who tried to cut his beard and then fled, but did not need medical attention.

Security forces are searching the area for the alleged attackers.

Mickness Levy, president of the Knesset, spoke with Porush and expressed his shock at the attack. Levy also spoke with the district commander of the Jerusalem Police Department, Superintendent Doron Turgeman, and discussed the investigation into the incident and the operational ways to arrest the attackers as soon as possible.

“I am shocked by the violent attack of Rabbi Meir Porush of the MK by dangerous attackers in Jerusalem,” he wrote. “This is a new and dangerous low point and it crosses a red line. The police must act quickly and get their hands on the attackers and act against them with all the force of law. It is unattainable for a public official to be attacked, it harms or feels threatened in any way, ”he wrote.

President Isaac Herzog also spoke with Porush on Monday afternoon, shortly after the attack took place, he said in a statement.

“Violence against anyone, and certainly against emissaries and elected officials, is crossing a red line and we must treat it with the utmost severity,” he said.

“I’m sure the police system will locate the attackers and bring them to justice soon.”
