The FDA advisory committee that reviewed the new Modern vaccine noted a specific side effect that involved several trial participants who have cosmetic facial filler.
Carmel Valley facial plastic surgeon Dr. Amir Karam specifically said facial swelling was observed in a small number of patients being tested.
“What they have seen in the 30,000-member trial that Moderna has done is that they found that approximately three of these patients had a reaction to the filling. The reaction was located where the filling was placed, so in a couple of cases were lip and cheek, ”he said.
One of the participants had filling two weeks before vaccination, and another six months before.
Millions of people have doctor-administered cosmetic facial fillers to smooth fine lines, wrinkles and improve cheeks and lips. Karam says the reaction to the vaccine is immunological.
“What happens is that a vaccine is taken and suddenly the immune system increases. The thinking is basically due to this effect of the immune system, as it is aimed at the areas you have filled in and causes a more robust inflammatory response, ”he said.
He also said that this possible side effect should not stop people from getting the vaccine when it is their turn. Karam said all derma filling reactions were easily treated by the medical staff.
But what if people have a filling and have a mild reaction? Karam said: “I think if it is localized, it is a very mild type of reaction just because the areas are swollen, I think the first step is to contact the doctor who injected the filling.”
If someone has a severe anaphylactic reaction, they should go to the emergency room immediately for help.
