DETROIT – Everything has worked as expected so far on Saturday, with isolated storms appearing at some points in the afternoon. This threat will continue into the night, although many more will see no more rain than the one that will end, in the late evening.
Temperatures have risen to about 90 degrees (32 degrees Celsius), with the heat index hitting 100 degrees (38 degrees Celsius) in some places.
The night hours will be partly cloudy, mostly clear and again oppressive, warm and battered, with lows only in the 70s low to medium (21 to 23 degrees Celsius). South wind between 4 and 7 mph.
Tonight’s sunset is at 20:13 and Sunday’s sunrise at 6:56
Chance of a Thunderstorm on Sunday
Partly cloudy, hot and humid again on Sunday, with scattered storms in the afternoon and evening. Some of these could be strong to severe, so keep an eye on the weather forecast on Sunday and monitor our app’s real-time radar to keep up with the weather. As for the risk, I only expect very scattered rainstorms during the afternoon, with the main window of the storms between 7pm and 11pm. Harmful gusts of wind are the main severe threat, with the possibility of hail in the strongest storms.
Announcements
Any storm, severe or not, will produce frequent and dangerous lightning and torrential rains.
Sunday highs near 90 degrees (32 degrees Celsius), with an afternoon heat index reaching at least the mid-90s (35 degrees Celsius). Although the National Weather Service has not issued any heat warnings for Sunday, it will approach that criterion, so stay hydrated and be careful not to overdo it tomorrow if you are out for an extended period of time.
Still, another air quality alert has been released for Sunday, so it will be our second consecutive day at Ozone Acton.
Fortunately, there are simple things you can do that make a significant difference in the amount of low-level ozone that forms today:
-
Wait until evening to power the vehicle. These gas fumes create a lot of ozone on a day like this.
-
Similarly, expect the use of any gasoline-powered lawn equipment until the evening, as the exhaust also creates a lot of ozone.
-
Avoid unnecessary orders or adjust them until evening. The less we drive our gasoline vehicles, the less exhaust we put into the air.
-
Finally, reduce electricity consumption. Turn off the lights when you leave a room for a while. Mark the thermostat a degree or two. Unplug unused chargers (they use electricity even when they are just plugged in and do not charge anything). Expect the use of major electrical appliances (dishwasher, washing machine, dryer) until the evening. The less electricity we use during the day, the less energy our coal-fired power plants have to produce.
There may be a missed rain or a storm on Sunday night after the storm main line exits, but I don’t think we’ll see much. It will remain a very hot night, with lows of about 70 degrees (21 degrees Celsius).
Announcements
Next week
A cold front finally crosses the area on Sunday night or Monday morning, and once it passes, you will notice the entry of drier air. As long as the morning synchronization is maintained in the early hours of the morning, we will see partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies on Monday, with highs in the mid-80s (29 to 30 degrees Celsius).
The rest of the week will be dry and comfortable, with highs not far from 80 degrees (27 degrees Celsius), and night lows that will generally range from the 50s above 60 lows (14 to 16 degrees Celsius). At this point, we can all breathe a sigh of relief as we have had a good time.
