DETROIT – Apart from a few showers, Saturday was a charity day and Sunday seems to be the same; then comes the first of two storms ending this insane year.
The high pressure sliding east to south Michigan should turn the winds further southwest (even southeast on Saturday night), so that it will lose its trajectory. The effect of Lake Michigan will allow for partial and temporary cleaning. The lows will be around 20 degrees, but maybe a few degrees colder if we get more cleanliness than expected.
Saturday sunset was at 5:07 pm Sunday sunrise is at 8:01 am
Even if some of us wake up with some partial sun in the early hours of Sunday morning, the day should be cloudy but milder, with temperatures rising in the mid-30s in the afternoon and continuing to rise to near of 40 degrees in the evening after the passage of a warm front (the front edge of a warmer air mass). There are chances of showering on Sunday afternoon, but I think most of the rain stays on until Sunday night.
Rainfall increases on Sunday night as a cold front approaches, followed by some snowfall (no build-up) after passing the front. Initially stable temperatures near 40 degrees will drop to mid-30 at sunrise on Monday.
Monday will be mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers and will also be a rough, windy day. Temperatures will drop slowly until the 1930s until the afternoon. Watch for frost spots if the temperature reaches freezing.
Tuesday will be very sunny, with highs in the late twenties and gentle wind – it will certainly be the most enjoyable day of the week, and a good day to support our local stores by buying post-Christmas sales.
On Wednesday it will be cloudy and windy, with rain in the afternoon or Wednesday evening. The highs will rise again to about 40 degrees. Rain increases on Wednesday nights and continues during Thursday and Thursday nights, New Year’s Eve. This will be a long-lasting rain event, with more than an inch possible. Since the surface of the ground is now frozen, this water will end up draining; floods will be a concern if they fall too much in too short a period of time. I will keep you updated, of course, on Local 4 and my daily weather articles. Thursday highs will be lows in the mid-1940s.
The way it is being set up now, we could start the first day of 2021 with rain and then see the rain turn to snow. We’re still not sure about the buildup, as it’s still too advanced to try to concretize, but the buildup is at least possible. Stay tuned. Temperatures will drop until the 1930s and Friday in the 1920s.
