OAKLAND, Calif., USA – The New York Yankees’ 13-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday against Frankie Montas, who covered 7 blank innings for the Oakland Athletics to win 3-2.
Matt Chapman fired a homer to cut the Yankees ’best streak in nearly 60 years. The Athletics had lost six commitments in a row and 10 of 12, before giving the Yankees their first defeat since Aug. 12, when they fell to Chicago against the White Sox.
New York was about to prolong its good run.
He lost 3-0 in the ninth inning, when Anthony Rizzo was fouled by a single with an out. Aaron Judge came next with his 29th homer, in front of Sergio Romo.
But the Mexican reliever forced Giancarlo Stanton to hit a ball and retire Joey Gall with a roulette wheel, to get his first save since last year.
The Yankees’ streak was the best they’ve had since winning 13 straight in September 1961, backed by Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris. In 1960, they racked up 15 wins, and in 1947 set the franchise record with 19.
Montas (10-9) looked tuned all afternoon, allowing just two hits. He received 6 strikeouts and handed out a ticket to get his first win since July 29th.
The Cuban Néstor Cortés Jr. (2-2) accepted two runs in the second inning.
