More than 3,300 more Utahns tested positive for COVID-19 in the past three days, and more than one in 5 were school-age children.
1,604 cases were reported on Friday, 1,129 on Saturday and 601 on Sunday, for a total of 3,329 and a daily average of just under 1,110, the Utah Department of Health reported Monday. (UDOH no longer publishes updates on Saturdays and Sundays).
Friday’s total was the newest of cases in a single day since Jan. 27.
The number of trials and the number of new cases generally decrease on weekends, especially on Sundays.
715 of these cases represented K-12 grade children. There were 298 cases in children aged 5–10 years; 205 cases in children aged 11-13 years; and 212 cases in children aged 14 to 18 years.
The seven-day continuous average of positive tests stands at 1,263 per day, the highest figure since February 2.
Five more Utahs have died from coronavirus in the past three days. Three of them were under 65 and one was under 45.
According to a UDOH analysis, in the past four weeks, unvaccinated Utahs were 4.9 times more likely to die from COVID-19 than vaccinated people. Unvaccinated people were also 6.2 times more likely to be hospitalized and 5.1 times more likely to test positive for coronavirus.
An additional 10,995 Utahns were fully vaccinated in the last three days, accounting for a total of 1,575,506 – 48.1% of the total Utah population.

There were two deaths in Salt Lake County: a man aged 45 to 64 and a man aged 65 to 84. And Washington County also reported two deaths: a 45-64-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man.
The other death was a woman in Box Elder County aged 25 to 44.
Tests reported in the last three days • 23,026 people were tested for the first time. A total of 36,480 people were tested.
Hospitalizations reported in the last three days • 465. They are two more than on Friday. Of those currently hospitalized, 178 are in intensive care, seven fewer than on Friday.
Percentage of positive tests • According to the original state method, the rate is 14.5%. This is lower than the seven-day average of 15.1%.
The new state method counts all test results, including repeated tests by the same individual. Monday’s rate was 9.1%, lower than the seven-day average of 10.8%.

Total so far • 463,204 cases; 2,628 dead; 20,131 hospitalizations; 3,129,977 people tested.
According to the UDOH, Utah has seen 10,061 “advanced” cases of COVID-19, people who contracted the virus two weeks or more after full vaccination. It is 0.6% of people completely vaccinated.
Only 552 of these people needed hospitalization: 0.045% of people were completely vaccinated. And there have been 50 deaths: 0.003% of people fully vaccinated.
