Mu COVID-19 cases identified in Wisconsin

MADISON, Wisconsin (WMTV) – Since they were designated as a variant of concern last week, state health officials have pointed to cases of the Mu variant here in Wisconsin.

Epidemiologists said the Mu variant, which was first discovered in Colombia in January, has now been detected in 47 states.

Data from the Wisconsin State Hygiene Laboratory on Mu show cases of this variant were already identified this April. There have been 48 cases of this variant discovered among those tested, and July accounts for 65% of cases so far.

However, it is not far from the number of cases of Delta variants still arriving in Wisconsin. Ninety-eight percent of all COVID-19 cases tested last month in Wisconsin were identified as Delta. The Delta variant is also responsible for most of the new cases now sweeping the United States.

Doctors admit they don’t know much about the Mu variant yet, but they have said that the more people get vaccinated, the less chance the virus has of mutating.

The president’s chief medical officer, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said he did not want to downplay the risks of the Mu variant, but said he did not believe it was an immediate threat to the U.S. There have been outbreaks of Mu in Columbia and Ecuador .
