Loved ones and their colleagues gathered Saturday to pay tribute to one of the FBI agents killed by an alleged child pornographer in Florida.
Laura Schwartzenberger, 43, was shot dead Tuesday morning when the suspect ambushed law enforcement while serving an order at her home in Sunrise. A second agent, Daniel Alfin, and three other officers were also killed.
The suspect, David Lee Huber, 55, ended his life, police said.
Schwartzenberger, of Pueblo, Colorado, had been with the agency since 2005. He worked in child crime cases for more than seven years. She leaves behind a husband and two children.
Hundreds attended the memorial service at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, which featured several speakers and a body of bombs and drums.
FBI Director Christopher Wray called her a “true American hero.”
He said Schwartzenberger was dedicated to his family. A member of the agency’s diving team, while working in New Mexico, she became the first female SWAT team member in Albuquerque, CBS 12 Miami reported.
Friends remembered the good times, from camping trips to barbecues in the garden, in comments during the emotional service.
“He tackled everything at full speed, never braking, even when crossing the finish line,” said his friend Brenda Chávez. “Laura, you have blessed the lives of each and every one of the people you have touched. We will never forget you ”.
The names Schwartzenberger and Alfin will be added to the Wall of Honor at the FBI headquarters in Washington.
