MUSC has no beds available in the Intensive Care Unit; UCI Roper to capacity

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – South Carolina Medical University officials said Wednesday afternoon that they have no beds in their Intensive Care Unit as COVID-19 cases increase in the state.

According to the MUSC, they have had to board patients with ICUs from other departments, including the emergency department and the Postanesthetic Care Unit.

Hospital officials remind people that the COVID-19 vaccine should be taken.

“This action will protect themselves and others and relieve our dedicated health workers right now,” MUSC officials said.

Roper St. officials Francis also said his ICU is ready, but they can still take in patients. Officials still stress that if people feel sick, they should go to the hospital.

Earlier today, the chief medical officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare said its hospital has reached a new record number of hospitalized patients on COVID-19 treatment.

Dr. Robert Oliverio said that 157 patients hospitalized in the four hospitals in the system are being treated by COVID, a total that breaks the previous record of 156 set on July 14, 2020. This total, according to Roper officials, represents the 34 percent of its total hospital population. .

On Wednesday, DHEC reported a total of 5,152 new cases, 800 more than the day before and 86 deaths, nearly 50 more than the day before.
