Mexican teams are more likely to return to South American competition before the league merges with MLS
Enrique Bonilla left the post of president of the MX League with the mission of making possible the return of Mexico to the Copa Libertadores and continue with the project of uniting the Mexican championship with the MLS. A mission that seems easier to accomplish in South America than in the North.
The MX League and the MLS work together to have a single league in the future, although to endorse this project requires the endorsement of FIFA and CONCACAF. Sources told ESPN Digital that the confederation that governs the United States and Mexico asked him to present the project and it would be analyzed, without declaring for or against. In the case of the highest body of football, they say they do not know the intention to merge two national leagues.
“FIFA has no information on any decision by one of its bodies relating to a league as a whole, so it is not something that FIFA commented on,” FIFA replied to ESPN.
Instead, in CONMEBOL has the doors open to the return of the MX League, provided that it adapts to its schedule and the guidelines that all clubs. Enrique Bonilla himself, a representative of the MX League at an international level, says that he is looking for a way to adapt the calendars of the Mexican tournament to the different competitions in which they intend to participate.
In the MX League say they do not envisage a return to the Copa Libertadores in 2021 and the coronavirus pandemic has wiped out the process towards a joint league between Mexico and the United States.
Mexico is closer to South America than joining forces with its northern neighbor, due to the difficulties they still have to overcome to think of a merger with MLS.
