For months gold and silver jewelry, jewelry and gold nails have begun to wash off the shores of a small Venezuelan fishing village devastated by the country’s economic crisis and Govt-19.
Chief Yolman Laurez, who discovered the treasure on the beach in Guaka in September, discovered the gold medal with the image of the Virgin Mary.
“I started to shiver, I cried for joy,” 25-year-old Lawrence told The New York Times. “This is the first time something special has happened to me.”
Since then, “dozens of villagers” have recovered supplies from the beach – mostly from a fish factory worker, including Chiro Quizada, who told the Times “this is God, setting his agenda”.
The locals have sold their treasure for 500 to 1,500 per piece – a boon to the village.
It is not known where the treasure came from, but it is mentioned in the paper that this mystery has grown into a mixture of folk tales, Caribbean pirate legends and Christmas customs.
