Twitter users believe Australian Open winner Naomi Osaka led runner-up Jennifer Brady during her acceptance speech.
Many have turned to the social media platform to highlight that Osaka said Brady “Jennifer,” even though he preferred “Jenny”.
The 23-year-old defeated Brady 6-4 by 6-3 to win her second title at the Australian Open and fourth Grand Slam.
At the beginning of her acceptance speech, the Japanese woman turned to Brady and asked, “Do you like to be called Jenny or Jennifer?”
The crowd laughed when the runner-up clearly said, “Jenny.”
Then Osaka said, “First I want to congratulate Jennifer.”
The comment was probably just a mistake by Osaka when he continued to praise the 25-year-old.
But this is not how it has been received on social media.
One Twitter user described Osaka as “rude,” while another thought she was polite to ask her first.
Many, however, found the champions ’comments amusing and a harmless example of trolling.
Osaka, who beat Serena Williams 6-3 by 6-4 in the semifinals, went on to describe their delight in winning another Grand Slam.
She said, “That feels amazing. I didn’t play my last time with the fans, so having that energy means a lot.
“Thank you for opening your heart and arms to us. Playing a Grand Slam is a super privilege that I will not take for granted ”.
Brady, who was playing in his first Grand Slam final after winning his first WTA title last August, was full of praise for the winner.
“I would like to congratulate Naomi for another Grand Slam title,” he said. “She’s an inspiration to us, what she’s doing for the game is amazing, bringing the sport out there.
“I hope the young girls are watching it and being inspired by what they’re doing.”
Osaka will now see its first French Open title in May.
He will also aim to win Wimbledon for the first time in June.
