Naseeruddin Shah shared a video message about the return of the Taliban and the people who celebrated it

New Delhi:

Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah has condemned what he says are “sections of Indian Muslims celebrating the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan,” and considers it dangerous.

“While the return of the Taliban to power in Afghanistan is a matter of concern for the whole world, the celebrations of the barbarians by some sectors of Indian Muslims are no less dangerous,” Naseeruddin Shah said in a video shared on social media.

The 71-year-old actor said those rejoicing over the Taliban resurgence should ask themselves if they “want to reform their religion or live with the old barbarism.”

He made a distinction between what he called “Hindustani Islam” and what is practiced in other parts of the world. Islam in India has always been different from Islam around the world, he said, adding, “May God not lead a time when it changes so much that we can’t even recognize it.”

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan on August 15 after defeating government forces across the country at a speed that shocked the world and caught the United States off guard in the midst of its withdrawal.

The group was overthrown two decades ago by U.S.-led forces to house al-Qaeda militants who led the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.

Taliban leaders have said they will respect human rights this time and will not allow terrorists to operate from the country.
