More than 90% of residents and Internal Medicine specialists estimate that the management of the MIR should be national

More than 90% of residents and specialists in Internal Medicine consider that the MIR training system is managed at a national level, in the face of other hypothetical possibilities (regional management or even of each hospital), according to a recent survey carried out by the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI) among its partners following the public debate that has emerged in recent weeks regarding possible changes in the current MIR training model for Specialized Health Training (ESF), currently national management.

With a total of 594 answers (500 specialists and 94 residents), a large majority of 9 out of 10 internists, both in the case of residents and specialists, answer the question How do you think it should be? the management of the MIR? stating that it must be national versus other response options (regional or each hospital).

If the data broken down between MIR and specialist responses are analyzed, there are hardly any differences. Regarding the participating MIRs, 90.43% consider that the management must be national (7.37% regional and 2.20% of each hospital). On the other hand, 94.4% of the participating specialists estimate that the management of the MIR must be national (3.8% regional and 1.8% of each hospital).

This survey is part of the monthly survey-barometer “SEMI Question of the Month” that the Company sends to its members to press and know their opinion on current issues or of interest to the group.

Regarding the global data (taking into account the answers regardless of whether they are MIR or specialists), 93.4% believe that the management should be national, 4.7% regional and 1.9% of each hospital.

INTERNAL MEDICINE IN THE NEXT SIGHT 2022

Internal Medicine, a general and transversal specialty with a global vision of the patient, is the third specialty that will be awarded more places in the next call of the MIR 2022, recently published in the BOE. It will have 401 places, compared to the 389 it had in the MIR 2021. It is a cardinal specialty within the NHS, as the internist is a specialist in the comprehensive management of hospitalized adult patients, with an important role in the care of chronic, complex and / or pluripathological patients, as well as with an important weight in the task of continuous medical training and in clinical research.
