Neighbors watch the ferocious rodents

(AP) – Residents of a Queens neighborhood face a gruesome threat.

Residents of the Rego Park neighborhood in New York City say an aggressive squirrel has jumped on them and bitten them in recent weeks, WCBS-TV reported Wednesday.

Micheline Frederick pointed to a bruise on her wrist where she said the squirrel landed on her and then sank her teeth into her fingers and hand.

“We’re fighting in the snow and there’s blood everywhere and my fingers are chewing and not letting go,” Frederick said. “It finally stopped and there I had a big bloody mess.”

A photo Frederick says he took after the attack shows a snow-covered road covered in blood.

“It was an MMA cage match! And I lost!” added.

Two other neighbors told WCBS the squirrel had jumped on them, apparently unprovoked.

“These squirrels are aggressively chasing people,” Vinati Singh said.

The city’s Department of Health advised residents to hire a licensed trapper, but large metal traps have yet to catch any squirrels, the station reported.

The reason for the aggressive behavior of the squirrel or squirrels is not clear. Small rodents such as squirrels rarely test positive for rabies and are not known to have transmitted it to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
