Netflix’s marketing department is happy to let you know that the streaming service will premiere at least one new movie every week in 2021. This is, perhaps, an attempt to distract the fact that while Warner Bros., Disney and NBC Universal, etc. they have their own streaming services (HBO Max, Disney +, Peacock), the list of non-original Netflix content is shrinking every month.
So, if it’s not the recent box offices that appeal to you, what will you get for the money from your February subscription? The biggest achievement of the month is Malcolm and husbande (February 5), an animated film starring Zendaya (recently won Best Emmy Actress for HBO) Euphoria) and John David Washington, written and directed by Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Netflix paid $ 30 million north for the film after it sparked a bidding war following its (virtual) premiere at the 2020 Toronto Film Festival. Netflix expects the small-scale story about two actors to return home from the premiere of their film to wait for critical warnings draw the attention of industry award voters remarkably absorbed in themselves.
If you don’t feel like watching the solipsistic navel in black and white, there’s To All the boys: always and forever (February 12), the third entry in YA’s epic rom-com trilogy that began with To all the guys I’ve loved before. The following week, Rosamund Pike and Dianne Wiest face the thriller of elder abuse I care a lot (February 19), marking the first time someone has made a thriller of elder abuse.
Here’s everything else that will arrive (and leave) Netflix in February 2021.
