Netflix will try cracking down on password sharing

Netflix said this week that it is testing a new verification process to crack down on password sharing on its streaming platform.

For users who the company suspects may not own the account, Netflix will email or send a verification code to the account owner. If the user does not enter the code within a specified time, they will not be able to view the content through this account.

“This test is designed to ensure that people who use Netflix accounts are allowed to do so,” a Netflix spokesman said. he said The Verge.

One of the uncertainties of the new feature is who is considered a home user, as Netflix allows passwords to be shared between family members, so it’s unclear whether household members will also have to go through the verification process. The company has not said how long the test will last.

The Hill has contacted Netflix to comment.

Along with concerns about password sharing, Netflix said the new verification process is designed to protect itself from hackers.

News of the additional security hurdle comes after Netflix announced which will produce 70 films this year.

Netflix has more than 200 million subscribers worldwide, with streaming services in almost every country.
