This morning, a group of people who identified themselves as the bases of the New Ideas (NI) party showed their support for the re-election of Mayor Miguel Pereira, who is running with the FMLN flag. In addition, they showed their rejection of the candidacy for the same position of Will Salgado, who runs for the official alliance of WIN and New Ideas.
The militants who attended the event clarified that they support Pereira, but not the FMLN.
For his part, on social media, the president of Noves Idees, Xavi Zablah Bukele, criticized the event and stated that Pereira uses the Noves Idees logo to give strength to the campaign.
The mayor came out in the wake of these statements and has said he is not to blame for “the militancy of New Ideas is supporting us in the municipality of Sant Miquel.”
At this event, held at a restaurant in Sant Miquel, NI militants endorsed their support for Pereira but supported the candidates for deputations in the department presented by Noves Idees.
Salgado, a candidate for the pro-government alliance and who served as mayor of Sant Miquel for 15 years, denied that they were representatives of the Noves Idees party.
“This is false, at this event there were veterans and communal leaders from the FMLN and some from the Armed Forces. There was no one from New Ideas,” he said.
He also added that Pereira could commit an “electoral crime because he used the flag, logo and name of a party to which he does not belong, he wanted to swindle the Miguel electorate by showing a support that does not exist.”
However, Pereira maintains that he was a guest at the event and said that those who used the New Ideas logos are the militants and affiliates of this party.
