New Mexico Lobos is likely to hire Richard Pitino as men’s basketball coach, sources say

Richard Pitino will be unemployed for less than a day.

Pitino, who was fired by Minnesota Monday night, is expected to be named the next head coach in New Mexico, sources told ESPN.

An official announcement is expected soon.

Pitino spent eight seasons in Minnesota, going to two NCAA tournaments. The Golden Gophers finished a game below .500 in each of the last two seasons and lost seven games in a row to end this past regular season, being left out of the NCAA tournament dispute.

Before taking over the Golden Gophers, Pitino spent a season as head coach at FIU and was an assistant coach in Louisville, Florida, Duquesne, Northeastern and Charleston.

Pitino would replace Paul Weir, fired after four seasons in Albuquerque. The Wolves have not participated in the NCAA tournament since 2014.
