It will be a new year and a new decade.
2021 is just around the corner, with many New Year’s Eve celebrations in downtown. For those without specific plans, here is a list of events that will help you find the best way to celebrate.
Midnight on Front Street
The city of Hattiesburg, downtown Hattiesburg and Visit Hattiesburg will host their second midnight on Front Street with a New Year’s Eve “ball drop” in downtown Hattiesburg. At the intersection of Front Street and Main Street, the Hub City sign will be suspended and lowered to take on the new year.
The event starts at seven in the afternoon, when the main roads will be closed to prepare it. At 9:30 p.m., vendors will open their stands and DJ Kuhjo will begin his set. Ten minutes before midnight, Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker will comment and begin the countdown to the new year.
The tradition, which began in 2018, had more than 4,000 participants watching the Hub sign go down. The historic past of the sign reveals the bright future of the Hub City. The Hub City Sign was donated by the Shopping Club in 1912 and designed from an RR Swittenburg entrance.
According to the Hattiesburg New Year’s Eve celebration website, the poster was withdrawn at some point from the depression. In 2018, Barker commissioned a new poster with a revamped design to start a new tradition.
“The whole vision of Hattiesburg is that we are no longer content to be the best in Mississippi, but we wanted to be a destination city for the southern Gulf,” Barker said at a recent Hattiesburg Arts Council meeting. “That means there are events that become traditions that everyone expects people to come to not just from all over the Mississippi, but from the entire region to be a part of it.”
Barker said the city held a test to celebrate New Year’s Eve celebrations for several years to bring more people to downtown Hattiesburg.
“We’ve done several other things to make the city center a real night spot for New Year’s Eve, but what we’ve done this year is the idea of a ball fall and what building we could make. ho, “Barker said. “Three weeks before last year’s New Year’s Eve, I said, ‘We’ll do it.’
