New York City declares a state of emergency due to snowstorm and schools move to totally remote learning

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) – New York Mayor Blasio has declared a state of emergency, including a restriction on all non-essential travel, starting at 6 a.m. Monday.

The following categories are exempt from these restrictions:
Public transport workers
First responders
Health and home care workers
Police officers
Peace officers
Any other worker who participates in vital services of the city
Delivery of food, medical supplies or fuel
Media
Hotel workers
Homeless protection and protection workers
Utility workers performing emergency repairs
People employed by pharmacies, grocery stores (including all food and beverage stores), convenience stores, wineries, gas stations, laundries, hotels, restaurants / bars and hardware stores
People seeking medical treatment or medical supplies
Rental vehicles, which are used to transport people employed to perform any of these services from workplaces and from their workplaces

The mayor warned New Yorkers to refrain from traveling as the intensity of the storm worsened.

There are 715 salt spreaders, 2000 plows are ready to clear roads with an additional 120 plows to join the fleet of other agencies in the city.

As of Saturday, more than 500 miles of roads were salted and pretreated for sanitation in the city.

All New York City students will move into remote learning on Monday due to the winter storm. As for Tuesday, de Blasio says no decision has been made yet.

The distribution of food in schools will be canceled, as will the childcare program of the Learning Bridges for Monday.

All Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocese of New York will remain closed on Monday, February 1 due to the expected major snowstorm. Monday will be a “traditional snow day” without remote instructions. All Catholic schools have snow days built into the calendar with contingencies to make up for instructional time.

The secondary schools of the archdiocese operate independently, so the families of the institute must follow the instructions of their individual schools.

Appointments for Monday’s COVID vaccine will be rescheduled due to the impending snowstorm.

“The last thing we want to do is urge our seniors to come out in the middle of a storm like this,” de Blasio told a news conference Sunday morning. “Does not make sense”.

Alternative side parking has been canceled for Monday and Tuesday. The mayor says the program of open restaurants / open streets on Monday night is also canceled.

A hazardous travel warning will take effect Monday and Tuesday.

DSNY has been divided into 2 to 12 hour shifts to work all day. The city has on hand more than 270,000 tons of salt and 320,000 gallons of calcium chloride.
