New York City and state officials on Friday opened a large-scale Covid-19 vaccination center at Yankee Stadium that aims to get more shots in the arms of residents in some of the city’s hardest-hit neighborhoods.
The Bronx site has the capacity to handle 15,000 vaccination appointments during its first week of operation, according to officials operating at the facility. As of Friday morning, there were only 2,000 appointments available for the first week, officials said. The facility will only take reservations from Bronx residents and the shootings will be by appointment only, according to officials.
Hundreds of residents lined up outside the park on Friday. Some had no reservation, but said they expected them to be added to a waiting list or given an appointment later.
Josefina Rodriguez, 85, went with her daughter to the appointment to get vaccinated at the stadium.
They live together in the same Pelham Parkway apartment. Mrs. Rodriguez had to cancel her original appointment when her daughter, Rosa Estela, and her son-in-law tested positive for the virus.
