New York has become the fourth state to surpass one million coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic.
The Empire State reported 15,074 new cases on Friday, bringing the state’s total to 1,005,785 infections data released on Saturday by the governor of New York. The state also reported 128 new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total to 30,337 deaths from the disease.
The official number of cases in the state can be deducted, as many became infected when evidence was not available in the spring, Notes from the Associated Press.
Texas, California and Florida are the United States only other states to reach the macabre milestone.
California, which was the second to reach the milestone after Texas, has now recorded an excess 2.34 million cumulative infections, the maximum of any state.
Texas has reported it 1.56 million cases and Florida has registered 1.35 million infections.
Cuomo did not address the milestone directly in a statement Saturday, but urged New Yorkers to remain vigilant, noting that coronavirus vaccinations have begun.
“While it may seem daunting after all this time, it’s critical that the rest of us be tough and continue our efforts to curb the spread,” Cuomo said. “We’ve come this far and we’ll finally get to that light at the end of the tunnel if we just do our part.”
The New York record comes as the United States continues to experience an increase in infections. The nation overcame 20 million cases in total on New Year’s Day and approaches 350,000 dead.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, tso far there have been 349,933 coronavirus deaths in the US.
