Officials say the call came for a fire in Lakewood, New Jersey, around 1 p.m., near Airport Road and Cedar Bridge Avenue. Extremely windy conditions spread the fire to areas of Brick Township.
Maris Gabliks, with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, says the fire is at 50%.
Gabliks says more than 100 residents in the immediate area have been evacuated, and nearby homes and commercial buildings were damaged.
According to the Point Pleasant Fire Department, the fire also damaged several structures near the Lakewood Industrial Complex in Brick Township, New Jersey.
A firefighter was injured, Gabliks confirmed, but could not provide further information.
The Garden State Parkway is closed between exits 83 and 90 in both directions. Part of Rt. 70 is also closed.
Crews in the surrounding area will work at night to control the brush fire.
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has established Stage 3 fire restrictions, which prohibit fires in wooded areas unless they are contained in an elevated stove that uses only propane, natural gas, gas, or electricity. Charcoal fires are prohibited.
Firefighters closest to Philadelphia are also battling a fire along the Delaware River in Salem County, New Jersey.
Crews are still working to determine what caused the two brush fires.
