Norma Torres responds to Nayib Bukele: “it is not interference to expect you to respect the laws”

A few days ago, in the face of the reform that would facilitate a purge in the Judiciary, the US congresswoman again condemned President Nayib Bukele, whom he constantly cites in his blows to democracy.

On this occasion, he told him that what was approved on Tuesday by deputies loyal to him is “another drastic leap towards undermining judicial independence”, and that this opened the door to politicize justice and obstruct investigations.

Bukele called on him not to interfere in El Salvador’s affairs and this was echoed by his fans, who insulted the American legislator.

This Friday, Torres responded to Bukele: “It is not interference to expect you to respect the laws of your country and the commitment you expressed to democracy,” the California-representing lawmaker said.

In addition, he expressed to Bukele that, in his view, “it is not interference to expect him to act when the State Department identifies corrupt and undemocratic actions in his government.”

In the opinion of the United States government, corruption, blows to democracy, insecurity, and lack of opportunities are the main factors that motivate hundreds of people to emigrate irregularly to this American country.

It is precisely the reduction of this mass exodus that is the main pillar of American foreign policy towards El Salvador and the region.

That is why Norma Torres and other legislators and officials from Washington have placed the attitudes and actions of Salvadoran officialdom that have the country on the brink of an authoritarian abyss, from which it took a long time to emerge.

Faced with the prospect of going back to the times of political violence, absolute lack of transparency, authoritarianism and corruption, Torres sent one last message to Bukele: “do not empower more of the same.”
