North Carolina police evacuated local businesses after finding several suspected arson devices near a Baptist church and county building
BREVARD, NC – North Carolina police evacuated local businesses Sunday after finding several suspected arson devices near a Baptist church and county building.
Police in Brevard, a town of about 7,500 in western North Carolina, said they received a call around 10:30 a.m. to report devices near Brevard First Baptist Church and the building of Transylvanian County Community Services.
When officers responded, they found several small devices that had not detonated, police said in a press release.
The area was closed and local establishments were evacuated as a precautionary measure, police said. There were no injuries.
City Council member Geraldine Dinkins said she was saddened by the discovery of the devices at Brevard, which she called a “very close-knit community.”
“This is really an act of cowardice, and Brevard is better than that,” he said.
Police said they are working with the Transylvania County sheriff’s office, the NC state investigation office, the FBI and the ATF to investigate.
No other information was provided immediately.
