Puerto Rican Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez today sent a letter to Treasury Department Secretary Janet Yellen to come out in defense of young Puerto Rican Alexis Hernandez, who in 2019 suffered burns to almost her entire body. after an explosion in his apartment in Mexico.
This after it was announced that Hernandez faces a debt of more than $ 1.7 million that the federal government is charging him for hospital bills.
Velázquez summed up the young man’s case to the secretary of the federal treasury, pointing out that this was a tragic situation and that the agency was “chasing” him to pay the millionaire sum.
“Mr. Hernandez and those who support him have asked the Treasury Department to forgive his debt, a debt he cannot pay, but has not received a response,” the representative said in her letter.
The congresswoman added that “after suffering a tragedy of this nature, the Treasury Department should not be burdened with a mountain of medical debt from which it cannot recover.”
Velázquez ended the letter by telling Yellen to ask the Treasury to give deep consideration to Hernandez’s appeal, according to the laws that apply to him.
