NYPD sends 200 to DC to help police on the opening day

On Jan. 20, the NYPD will dispatch 200 members of its own to Washington, DC, to assist police during the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, sources said.

The district is seeking the assistance of 3,000 department officials from across the country for the swearing-in ceremony, law enforcement sources said.

The inaugural parties will be much smaller than usual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden urged his fans not to travel to DC and the traditional Pennsylvania Avenue parade was dismissed in favor of a “virtual” parade.

But after last week’s deadly chaos on Capitol Hill at the hands of a pro-Trump crowd, Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has called on federal officials to take several security measures ahead of the inauguration of Capitol Hill. this year.

Bowser, a Saturday letter in the Department of Homeland Security, asked officials to cancel the permit meetings from Jan. 11-24.

The mayor is also seeking an extension of the “period of national security events,” which will allow more inaugural preparation time “given the new threats from the insurgent acts of national terrorists.”
