HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Beginning Monday, new rules will apply to pressure people to get vaccinated and protect service and government workers from infection.
Honolulu state and county orders want to have on hand vaccination tests or negative COVID test results.
In Oahu, companies like restaurants, gyms and entertainment venues will ask for them.
The Oahu Safe Access program goes into effect Monday.
Japanese barbecue Gyu Kaku says its employees already have a system in place.
“So we’re going to have extra staff at the host stand, so that one person can explain the new mandate to everyone? You know, not everyone knows that and it’s going to be the first week,” said Sheryl Matsuoka, a partner at Gyu Kaku and executive director of the Hawaii Restaurant Association.
Except for children under 12, you will need to prove vaccination or take a negative test within 48 hours if you want to dine at Oahu restaurants.
Also in effect Monday, the governor’s executive order requiring visitors and contractors to state facilities to prove they have been vaccinated or have been negative.
The standard includes libraries and public schools, which had to be planned quickly.
“It’s not 100% perfect and I would be the first to say it and even what we are trying to deploy will not be perfect,” said state controller Curt Otaguro.
The rule does not apply to children under the age of 12, public school students, airport passengers, people in beach parks, prison facilities and housing. state or to persons making short deliveries.
Very similar rules have been established for months on the campuses of the University of Hawaii, requiring anyone stepping on their facilities to upload the tests to a special application.
Dan Meisenzahl, a spokesman for the University of Hawaii, said it was not easy to set up the system and implement it. “It was really a challenge for our IT department and it’s also a daily challenge,” he said.
