The Buckeyes may not yet be out of the woods with CoVID-19.
According to Jeff Snook, a long-respected journalist who has written several books on Ohio State football but currently does not have a publishing house, the Buckeyes are dealing with some bad news from CoVID. Here is what Snook posted on his Facebook page this morning:
“There is bad news leaked at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center: At least one very prominent starter in attack and several others have tested positive and will miss Saturday’s Big Ten game against Northwestern. I will not publish the names. If the game should be canceled “It will not be rescheduled, and Ohio State’s hopes for a college football playoff will probably fade.”
In addition, Rick Neuheisel of SiriusXM reports this morning that an OSU “all-star receiver” has tested positive for CoVID, which would seem to indicate Chris Olave or Garrett Wilson. This report has not been confirmed.
Right now, this weekend’s Big Ten championship game is not believed to be in jeopardy.
Ohio State is scheduled to release its availability report for this weekend’s Big Ten Championship game in Northwestern at approximately 10 a.m. Friday. This is usually the case, but before the cancellation of the Illinois game and before the Michigan state game, the announcement of this game state report was delayed. It came out about an hour before the Michigan State game kicked off two weeks ago.
Ohio State does not publicly discuss details about the medical privacy of individual players and coaches, which includes the discussion of specific information about CoVID-19.
The Buckeyes have recovered players on the training ground who had tested positive before the Illinois game and those players should be available for Saturday’s game. But anyone who gives positive from here would have problems. The College Football Playoff committee says each team must continue to follow its conference guidelines regarding CoVID-19. This means that if an Ohio State player tests positive, he will have to stay out for 21 days.
21 days today is January 7, which is six days after the forecast to play the national semifinals on New Year’s Day.
This story will be updated if more information is available.
