MIAMI GARDENS, Florida – Ohio State runner-up Trey Sermon was taken to a local hospital for later diagnosis after suffering an apparent left collarbone injury in the Buckeyes’ first unit in the National Championship of college football playoffs presented by AT&T vs. Alabama Monday night. .
Sermon was injured in his only transport, which was 2 yards on the first low. When he reached the side, he seemed to favor his left shoulder.
As they carried him into the dressing room, Sermon’s left arm hung loosely beside him. ESPN’s Maria Taylor reported that Sermon was grabbing the collarbone area on his left side and could not raise his hand. He underwent an x-ray and was taken to Broward General Hospital, Taylor reported.
The sermon has been one of the main keys to the Buckeyes’ offense in the last two games, rushing to gain 524 yards in wins against Northwestern in the Big Ten and Clemson championship game in the PCP semifinals in the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
Master Teague, who missed last week’s game against the Tigers, replaced Sermon on the run and quickly scored in an 8-yard run as the Buckeyes tied the score at 7.
Taylor reported that Tony Alford, coach of Ohio State runners, went to Teague and said, “Hey, Trey is out. We have to win this game for him now.”
Ohio State left-back Wyatt Davis was also helped off the field in the second quarter with an apparent knee injury, again hard for the Buckeyes offense.
Davis, the best offensive line player in American State and Ohio, is ranked as the No. 2 guard available for the next NFL draft.
