FLEMING ISLAND, Fla. – One person died after a vehicle crashed into a detention pond on Fleming Island in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.
The Florida Highway Patrol website shows that troops were called in around 3:25 a.m. until the crash in Neptune Park, next to Thunderbolt Road.
The Sheriff’s Office said its diving team responded. Also, Clay County Fire and Rescue was on stage.
Later in the morning, a trailer pulled the car, a silver four-door Nissan Altima, out of the holding pond.
Several neighbors told News4Jax that they often hear cars running on Thunderbolt Road leading to the park where the pond is located. They said Sunday around 2am was no different.
“They just run up and down the street, and it’s very scary,” said a neighbor who didn’t want to be identified. “It’s right behind the school and there are a lot of young children in this community.”
The Highway Patrol is leading the investigation.
