A group of gunmen stormed an orphanage on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince last Monday, killing a security guard and sexually assaulting three people, including two minors, official sources said today.
A 15-year-old girl and a 27-year-old waitress were raped and a 13-year-old boy was “sexually assaulted,” Arielle Jeanty Villedrouin, director of the Institute for Social Welfare and Research (IBSER), told Efe. of the control of orphanages.
The attack was perpetrated by about fifteen armed men on Monday morning in Croix-des-Bouquets, a town located 12 kilometers from Port-au-Prince.
The bandits jumped the fence of the orphanage, locked the doors to prevent anyone from entering or leaving, and spent at least two hours looting the site in search of money.
“The children have been taken to a safer center. The raped girl was taken to the hospital where she is receiving treatment. We will offer the victims psychosocial support,” Villedrouin said.
IBSER, Unicef and the NGO Terre des Hommes are providing assistance to the victims, Villedrouin added.
Haiti is going through a serious wave of violence perpetrated by armed gangs, which dominate many neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince, amid the political crisis in the country.
On Sunday, 12 members of a religious group were abducted, including two of French nationality, in Ganthier, about 20 kilometers from the capital.
