Outstanding Cuban boxer and coach José Luis Hernández dies

The prominent Cuban boxer José Luis Hernández died this Tuesday in the municipality of Alquízar, province of Artemisa, at the age of 56, the sports site has reported JIT.

Hernandez was champion of the division of the 67 kilograms during the Central American and Caribbean Games celebrated in Havana, in 1982, and represented the Cuban selection of Boxing in multiple international tournaments and World-wide Championships.

“He leaves us physically a proven Cuban, beyond his balances as an exponent of our boxing, which he served with passion and dedication,” INDER president Osvaldo Vento Montiller wrote on Twitter.

The divisions in which Hernandez stood out moved between those of 63.5, 67 and 71 kilograms, in which he was medalist of all the metals in National Tournaments like Girón Beach and Giraldo Cordova Cardín, crowning like winner of first in 1988 and 1989.

In 1987, he won the Gee-Bee tournaments in Helsinki, Finland, after defeating German Torsten Schmitz 4-1 and at the Feliks Stamm in Warsaw, Poland, when he knocked out fellow German Cornel Ladewig in the first assault.

After retiring in 1990, Hernández continued to be involved in the sport of fists as a physiotherapist and coach in the Cuban preselection.

His main achievement as a coach was the silver medal won by boxer Lorenzo Aragon at the 2004 Athens Olympics, which led to him going to work as a professional in Ecuador, due to his results.

Hernández’s body will be buried in Alquízar and buried in Guane, Pineda del Río, where the boxer was born. INDER, the Cuban Olympic Committee and the Cuban Boxing Federation extended their condolences to relatives and friends of the beloved boxer.

The three national athletes died at the age of 64, 79, 32 years respectively. Especially tragic was the early death of the Cuban handball star, the death of the trunk a good career in the Portuguese league.
