PA COVID: Vaccine shortage causing frustration in Delaware counties, Montgomery

YEADON, PA (WPVI) – The shortage of COVID-19 vaccine in Pennsylvania is frustrating officials in Delaware and Montgomery counties.

“Last week we only received 1,000 shots. We certainly asked for more than that,” said Kevin Madden, Delaware County Councilor.

The county has two mass vaccination sites, one in Yeadon and another in Aston. Madden said they are ready to vaccinate the more than 500,000 people living in the region.

He said the percentage of residents who have been given both doses of vaccine is also small.

“At the moment it exceeds a little over 1%. It is a very fragmented system. I think the countries that have done well have been a coordinated process at a very high national level. This is not the case here,” regidor.

However, he urges residents to stay the course and wear masks. He also wants everyone to check the county website to see if his primary care doctor can also administer the vaccine now.

“Anyone who accesses the county website can see a list we maintain in real time of all the county providers who have the vaccine,” Madden said.

Val Arkoosh, chairman of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, says they are in the same situation. This week they have only received 1,000 new doses for the first time. If they don’t get more, he says they could run out of doses at their clinics early next week.

“This will allow our clinic to run until next Monday and that’s only because we have vaccines at the clinics on Monday and Tuesday, which had to be canceled,” Arkoosh said.

However, there was some good news: Montgomery County received second-dose vaccines.

“I want to remind everyone where you got the first dose of vaccine is where you have to go to get your second dose,” Arkoosh said.

They have opened a second mass vaccination clinic at Norristown Area High School.

In Montgomery County, just under 1.5% of the population has now been completely vaccinated.
