As the consequences continue to flow from overproduction Matthew Stafford/Jared Goff Trade, we have some new details about the conversations the lions had before they did. Most notable, the Panthers had offered the eighth overall selection in this year’s draft, as well as a subsequent selection, reports Albert Breer of SI.com. Many would say it’s a better offer than Detroit took from the Rams, two future first-round options (which could be too late), a third-round, and Goff’s inflated contract.
Getting that deal would have given the Lions the seventh and eighth pick this April, giving them plenty of ammo if they wanted to get on one of the first pairs of quarterbacks. Clearly, they didn’t see Goff and his contract as a huge negative as many others do, and this offer of Matt Rhule it will probably be the one we will look back on the most when we reflect on this trade in the coming years. If nothing else, this only demonstrates the degree of seriousness Carolina has in upgrading Teddy Bridgewater, and we have heard that they are preparing for an aggressive career Deshaun Watson.
Washington Breer writes that he offered the 19th selection this April and a third round selection. He Colts he discussed the selection packages, but never made an offer that included his first round this year, the 21st selection. Although the 49ers showed some interest, they never made a formal offer, which followed the content that allowed them to play it. Jimmy Garoppolo.
He Broncos He also showed interest, but Breer says it was clear that at first the price went up far beyond the new GM George Paton he was willing to pay. He Patriots they were willing to pack a second-round player with a defensive player, though obviously they wouldn’t, and apparently Stafford had no interest in going to New England and meeting with Matt Patricia anyways.
Interestingly, Breer points out that the Jets billed on the weekend. All those other teams had been very much related to Stafford, but New York would have been a wildcard thing. Talksbviamente, the talks went nowhere, but it’s remarkable to know that the Jets at least plan to shoot with a veteran passer instead of Sam Darnold or a rookie with his second overall selection.
So what do you think? Are the Lions stupid for not taking the eighth pick and running with it, or will Goff prove some people wrong?
