David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who co-wrote the screenplay for the original feature film with Wan and Will Beall, rewrote the screenplay for the new film.
A petition to remove Heard from the cast following her scandal over her alleged abuse of her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, was previously circulated and received more than 1.5 million signatures, although she remained linked to the project.

Confirmed: Production of a sequel to the DC Comics-based film initially began in 2018 and Wan’s involvement with the project was announced to the public the following year.
