Business Insider obtained a copy of his book, “Danger,” and reported that Ryan was surprised by Trump’s victory over Hillary ClintonHillary Diane Rodham Clinton: The Pennsylvania GOP authorizes citations in an election poll. We must respond to all countries to help our Afghan allies.. But, realizing he should work with Trump and since the Republican Party controlled both the House and Senate, Ryan began investigating how to work with someone “amoral and transactional,” according to the book.

A wealthy doctor, a Republican donor, also told Ryan he had to “understand what a narcissistic personality disorder is.” The doctor explained his “thoughts on how to best deal with a person with antisocial personality disorder” in an email, with links to articles and information about the disorder, according to the book.

“Ryan studied them for weeks, convinced that Trump had the personality disorder,” Woodward and Costa write.

Trump and Ryan struck a blow after Trump publicly defended the neo-Nazis who started a violent riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2017.

“White supremacy is repulsive,” Ryan tweeted at the time, calling for riot police. “This bigotry is contrary to everything this country represents. There can be no moral ambiguity.”

Woodward and Costa write that Trump later called Ryan, infuriated by the statement. Trump reportedly shouted, “You’re not the fox with me!”

“Are you done?” Ryan called again, according to his book. “Can I have time to speak now? You are the president of the United States. You have an obligation of moral leadership to achieve that right and not declare that there is moral equivalence here.”

However, Trump dug his heels in and replied, “These people love me. These are my people. I can’t stab people who support me.”

Trump reportedly gave in after Ryan drew attention to the neo-Nazis in the crowd.

“Well, yes, there are bad people,” Trump said, according to the book. “I get it. I’m not for that. I’m against all of that. But there are some of these people who are for me. Some are good people.”

Trump and Ryan continued to shake their heads throughout Ryan’s tenure as president.
