Pete Alonso leads Mets to fifth straight victory

WASHINGTON – Pete Alonso has spoken of bringing the Mets into the postseason with the strength of will. Your bat may also have something to say.

Alonso won the tenth of the Mets ’6-2 win over the Nationals on Friday, eliminating Edwin Diaz from the hook after his first save in more than six weeks. All in all, Alonso finished 2-on-5 with an RBI triple to follow his game-winning success.

Leading for most of the night in the National Park, the Mets handed things over to Diaz to protect a two-run lead in the ninth. He quickly gave up the lead on a John Soto solo homer and Riley Adams’ RBI double.

But Diaz managed to escape this entry and take the Mets to extras, where Alonso got his fifth straight victory to put them back at .500. Kevin Pillar followed him up with a two-run double to give the Mets some cushion and Jonathan Villar added an RBI single.
