Philadelphia police are investigating the first homicides in 2021

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – Philadelphia police are searching for several suspects after a violent New Year’s Eve. Officials say at least ten people were shot in the city overnight and three of them were killed.

The first homicide of the new year happened in South Philadelphia.

Police say a man was shot around 12:30 a.m. on 100th Street on Ritner Street.

A 37-year-old victim was shot in the thigh, officials say.

Neighbors told off-camera Action News that the man walked around the corner to Fitzgerald Street, going door-to-door trying to get help.

Officials say he was pronounced dead at Jefferson University Hospital.

Shortly before 2:00 a.m., a shooting occurred at Walnut Street’s 2100 block in an apartment.

Police say a 22-year-old woman was shot in the arm and hip.

The woman, whose identity is unknown, was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Police say he has been arrested for the incident.

Another homicide took place in an unknown location, according to officials.

The victim entered the Temple Emergency Department with a gunshot wound and collapsed around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

So far there have been no arrests.

A third homicide occurred at the 2500 block of South 66th Street, southwest Philadelphia, around 4:30 a.m. Friday.

Police say a 26-year-old man was shot in the basement of a house during a party.

Detectives are waiting for witnesses who were at the party to present information about the shooter.

Neighbors say they had heard parties at the house before.

“I just don’t get it. If they stopped partying, maybe it would stop, but the violence has to stop,” said Coral Chambers, who moved to the neighborhood less than a year ago.

Captain Scott Drissel, of the 12th Police District, says he hopes all areas of the city’s criminal justice system can work together to reduce the homicide rate by 2021.

“We are not the only ones in the criminal justice system. We need everyone to work in unison even during a pandemic,” Drissel said. “Because the crime doesn’t stop.”
