Philadelphia shooting: 17-year-old boy shot dead in Kingsessing

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) – A 17-year-old boy was killed in a shooting at a recreation center in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia, police said.

The shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. Friday at the Francis Myers Recreation Center at 58th Street and Kingsessing Avenue.

Investigators could be seen looking for evidence on the basketball court.

Police said the 17-year-old was shot in the chest.

The teenager, whose identity is unknown, was taken by police to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

No weapons were recovered from the site, officials said.

No arrests have been made.

Not far from this scene, 55th Street and Christian Street, patrols were reinforced around another recreation center, Christy Recreation Center, after 16-year-old Kahree Simmons was shot dead. Thursday at the basketball court.

Police said in that case that four men got out of a small SUV and started firing, hitting Simmons and two other teenagers who were playing.

Action News spoke with his family Friday before.

“Kahree was loved. He didn’t deserve it, he didn’t do anything. He just left home and went to play basketball with his friends. That was it,” Kahree’s brother Stephen Simmons said.

They ask for help for an arrest.

“I ask anyone who hears me now to think if it was your child. We were like you, we see it in the news and we never thought it would be our situation, but today is our situation,” Stephen Simmons said.

Also Thursday, a security video captured the sounds and part of a quadruple shooting in the 1400 block of N. 76th Street on Overbrook Park.

Another 16-year-old died, as did a 24-year-old man.

During a press conference at the 55th meeting in Christian, Mayor Jim Kenney said the city will begin weekly updates on the gun violence epidemic.

“The briefings will be open to members of the media and will be broadcast publicly on the Philadelphia City Facebook page,” Kenney said.

While police were investigating Kingsessing’s murder, a fire broke out in the apartment on the street.

The fire started shortly before 9 p.m. when smoke was seen from a two-story duplex.

The crews controlled the fire in 15 minutes.

There were no injuries in the fire.
