Pirates appoint by assignment to Polanco

The Pirates appointed Dominican Patrolman Gregory Polanco by assignment on Saturday.

“Gregory has been quite a professional throughout his career with the Pirates, including our conversation about that decision,” General Manager Ben Cherington said. “He’s been a good teammate, he knows how to act with class and he represents the Pirates and the city of Pittsburgh very well. We wish him all the success in the world from now on.”

Polanco went 11-6 in his last four games and in the year has averaged 208 with 12 doubles, 11 homers and 36 RBIs, leading the team with 14 stolen bases in 107 encounters with the Pirates.

In his career in Pittsburgh (2014-2021), Polanco batted 241 with 96 fumbles, 362 tackles and 98 scams in a total of 823 games. His 697 encounters in the central garden are the fourth largest in Pirates history (since 1901), behind Puerto Rican Roberto Clemente (2295), Paul Waner (1995) and Dave Parker (1180).
