This is not a sham. Playboi Carti has finally released its long-awaited second album, Red Lotta whole.
On Friday (December 25), Playboi Carti released his new LP, which comes two years after he released his 2018 debut album, Die Lit. The 24-song project includes songs titled “Stop Breathing,” “Slay3r” and “Vamp Anthem” and the previously released single “@Meh.” Guest appearances include Future, Kid Cudi and Kanye West.
Red Lotta whole has been a coveted hip-hop project for almost two years. The rapper began teasing the album in 2018 and, a year later, the release date became a waiting game since the announcement of the LP’s existence. In July 2019, Playboi Carti announced that he would be leaving the album within two months after making the public statement during a performance in Milwaukee, Wis.
“I’m trying to drop that shit in the next 60 days,” Carti said at the time, speaking WLR. He went on to say, “I won’t lie. I think we’ve worked too hard so far. So I’ll do this shit without any features.” Then nothing.
In 2020, fans were anxiously awaiting its release. Carti hinted that the new music would arrive on April 14 this year when he posted new artwork on his Instagram page. However, the publication did not include any details to accompany it. On April 16, Carti released the new single, “@ Meh,” after announcing the album on social media. “@meh! out now,” Carti tweeted about the song produced by Neeko Baby, Deskhop and Jetsonmade.
In September, Iggy Azalea, the mother of Carti’s son Onyx, refused to give fans an official release date for WLR but he promised that the album would be something worth the wait.
“I will never tell you when Red Lotta whole fall, boys. Good try, “Iggy explained.” I can tell Red Lotta whole it’s amazing, it’s the next level and it’s so much better than anyone else I’ve ever heard of doing, really. ”
After two years of provoking this album they started rubbing rap fans wrong. Whenever Carti posts on social media, his followers think WLR it’s on its way, but then nothing falls and they avoid their frustrations on Twitter and in the comments section of many Instagram accounts.
On December 6, growing Atlanta rapper Mario Judah decided to take matters into his own hands and demand that Carti leave the album. In a video posted on Twitter, Judah threatened to leak songs from Red Lotta whole one by one if Carti could not deliver the album. Judah’s ultimatum came after Carti appeared on social media and apparently hinted that the album would arrive after all.
“Don’t fuck up this card … you have until 6pm ⚠️⚠️ @playboicarti,” Judah tweeted.
A few hours later that day, Judah released “Bih Yah,” a song he wrote, recorded, produced, mixed, and designed himself that sounds surprisingly like Carti’s tone and delivery.
Unfortunately, Judah’s threats fell on deaf ears, because once again fans had been confused to think that Carti would stop playing with his emotions and release his long-awaited album.
On the afternoon of December 10, the Atlanta rapper posted a picture of himself on Instagram with the caption, “I can believe I’m about 2 dRoP. WTF ps. I’m going to a tank @ THE CASTLE n0w thx. YES.”
Judah later celebrated on social media after Carti’s announcement. “So after warning … after warning … playboi carti will finally release WLR, we guys did,” he tweeted. Still, the date still came and went without an album.
Finally, on Tuesday (December 22), Carti officially announced the release date of the LP as Christmas Day and revealed the cover. He also released a controversial line of merchandise that corresponded to the release of the album.
No more preambles, Red Lotta whole it is finally here.
